Training Faculty
Alfried Längle, M.D., Ph.D. and local Canadian trainers are responsible for the entire psychotherapeutic training. They may draw upon various other training staff to facilitate and enrich the training experience.
Alfried Längle, MD, PhD
Dr. Längle studied medicine and psychology at the Universities of Innsbruck, Rome, Toulouse and Vienna. After years of hospital work in general medicine and psychiatry, he started a private practice in psychotherapy, general medicine and clinical psychology in Vienna (since 1982). At the same time he began his close collaboration with Viktor Frankl (1983-1991). He is the founder and president (since 1983) of the International Society for Logotherapy and Existential Analysis (Vienna). Dr. Längle is a constant lecturer at the Universities of Vienna (since 1984), Innsbruck (1994), Moscow (2000), Buenos Aires (2000) and Mendoza (2000).
Derrick Klaassen, Ph.D., R. Psych
Derrick Klaassen, Ph.D., R. Psych., is a psychologist in private practice (with Altus Psychological Services in Fort Langley, BC) and also serves as an Associate Professor of Counselling Psychology at Trinity Western University (Langley, BC). Dr. Klaassen has been involved with Existential Analysis for approximately 15 years. He currently serves as the chair of the board and as a clinical trainer for the Existential Analysis Society of Canada. His psychotherapeutic practice focuses on assisting clients with a variety of concerns, including rehabilitation from chronic or serious illnesses, personal/spiritual development, as well as general psychological concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma, grief/loss, etc.). He also provides EA-related clinical supervision and self-experience.
Rochelle Chapman, MA, RCC
Rochelle has an MA in Counselling Psychology from UBC and completed a thesis about the use of metaphor in counselling. She also has a Masters in Theology and the Arts from Regent College and a BA in Communication Studies. In the past, she has worked doing individual counselling at a university counselling centre and at a non-profit, leading experiential groups for people in recovery from addiction. For the past few years, she has been developing a private practice.
Beth Daley, MEd, RCC
Beth studied Counselling Psychology at UBC and is currently working as a therapist at Jewish Family Services in Vancouver. Along with her good friend Kari-Ann Thor, she helped write and currently co- teaches Existential Living workshops which are professional development courses with Existential Analysis themes. She is enthusiastic about the EA approach to living and counselling and is pleased to be involved in the newly begun EA Canada Society. Her clinical interests are Spirituality and healing, Trauma therapy and suffering paradigms.
Mihaela Launeanu, MA, PhD (UBC)
Mihaela has a M.A. in Clinical Psychology, a M.A. in Counselling Psychology, and completed clinical training in Existential Analysis. She has over 10 years of clinical experience working with diverse populations (e.g., children, adolescents, adults, older adults) in various clinical settings (e.g., community, inpatient, forensic, higher education). In addition to her clinical work, she has been teaching courses in the area of counselling psychology at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Community College, and provided clinical supervision to junior practicum students at BC Mental Health and Addiction Services.
Karin Steichele, MA, CCC
Karin has been working as a counsellor and therapist since 1995 in college counselling centres and private practice. She has been involved in Existential Analysis (EA) since 2002, and EA’s philosophy, therapeutic approach and way of living deeply resonates with her. EA has become an integral part of Karin’s holistic approach to therapy. In 2013, Karin began her involvement in EA training, which brings her great joy in sharing EA with others. Karin’s other passions include spiritual practices, being in nature, especially the ocean, and spending time with her dog.
Käri-Ann Thor – MEd, RCC
Käri-Ann’s first career was in outdoor education followed by over 20 years working with children, youth, and families. She is very passionate about experiential learning and thoroughly enjoys instructing at a counsellor training college and co-facilitating the Existential Living professional development workshops she co-developed with Beth Daley. She also has had a part-time private practice for 11 years with specialties in the areas of loss and grief (including pet loss), transitions, relationships, self-care, CBT skills, and EA. Käri-Ann also supervises students individually and in group. When she is not working, she likes to spend her time in the mountains, on the water, or in the garden.
Daniel W. Parker – PhD.
Dr. Parker is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist with a private practice in Portland, Oregon. He has practiced, taught, and presented on existential psychology at various universities and conferences in North America, Latin America, and Europe. He began studying Existential Analysis under Alfried Längle in 2006 and has over 10 years experience working as an existential psychotherapist. In addition to being on the training faculty of the Center for Existential Analysis and Logotherapy, Dr. Parker is one of the founding members of the Existential Analysis Society in Vancouver, Canada.
